Skin Prick Test (SPT)
Procedure: A small amount of a suspected allergen is placed on the skin, usually on the
forearm or back. The skin is then lightly pricked with a devise to allow the allergen to enter
just below the surface.
Duration: Results typically appear within 15-20 minutes.
Indications: Used to identify allergies to pollen, mold, pet dander, dust mites, and certain
foods.
Patch Test
Procedure: Patches containing small amounts of allergens are applied to the skin, usually
on the back, and left in place for 48 hours.
Duration: The patches are removed after 48 hours, and results are typically read at 72 to
96 hours.
Indications: Primarily used to identify contact dermatitis caused by allergens such as
fragrances, preservatives, hair dyes, and metals.
